Night School (1981)

Out of nowhere comes a lost 80's slasher classic, Night School. Finally on DVD, this film is packed with everything a slasher fan could want! Plenty of well shot kill scenes, great location, awesome soundtrack and good character development. You can never go wrong with a black gloved killer going after the girls at an all girls school in Boston. Highly recommended.

Finally some style...

I recently came across this trailer and it has really peaked my curiosity. I see a lot of films come out that lack any vision what so ever and it is nice to finally see some style here. The music and the visuals are pretty damn perfect and I look forward to seeing this film.

80's packaging at its best.

Yesterday I received the DVD collection from Camp Motion Pictures entitled, "The Basement." The Basement is a feature film shot on super 8 from 1989. The collection includes 5 feature films, mostly shot on video from the 1980's. The packaging is worth the price of admission alone. This attention to detail really captured the essence of the films. And also included with the 3 DVD set was a bonus VHS tape featuring the film, The Basement!

I fired up my VCR last night and sat down to watch the low budget flick from '89. It was really awesome to see the play button, the words hifi and a tracking mark begin to happen as the film started. What the film lacked in quality and story it had in heart. Overall the films aren't top shelf cinema, but that's what makes them so great. Paired with this packaging, you can't beat this set!

Drive

"Drive" is an incredible film. I just saw it last night in an almost empty theater. It was packed with great action, music and an overall awesome story. I was hooked from the opening scene. The direction was incredible and Ryan Gosling nailed it. The electro 80's style soundtrack and drone type films during intense action fit the mood of this film perfect. As a sucker for the 80's, I was overjoyed at even the pink cursive style font for the credits. Overall this film was a step in the right direction for mainstream films. It has been marketed a little poorly, but it still got me in the seat and I'm glad it did. Check it out.

On Monday I am heading out to Wisconsin to shoot a film entitled, Billy Club. I will be working alongside the very talented Drew Rosas & Nick Sommer. You can get Drew's previous directorial debut, Blood Junkie, at Family Video or Amazon.

I am looking forward to working as just the cinematographer on this project. I will be shooting on the Panasonic AF-100 again with Zeiss Primes. I looked over all the gear today and got really excited about the shoot. Looking forward to playing with such nice glass and making some great pictures. Along with the Zeiss glass and the AF, I'll be shooting to a nano flash @ 180 Mbit I-Frame recording. This is the same settings I used for, The Sleeper. I was happy with the results and the bit rate, so I won't change the formula for this camera's workflow. I am looking forward to controlling the highlights a little more and hopefully getting rid of all the nasty "bloom." The Zeiss glass will be a far cry different then the Nikon lenses I have shot my previous films on.

Great new 80's film!

"Junkies man..."

Now here is a film where the writer/director truly gets it. A short, to the point 80's slasher film set in the woods. It doesn't get much better than that. The great part about this film is the look and the wardrobe. I was AMAZED at the quality of production design that went into this film. For such a low budget movie there were no tell signs of a modern film. It had an incredible retro look. I could not get over how well done the cinematography and design was. It was also shot in a killer location. They scored a huge abandoned chemical factory. Great backdrop.

Another aspect that made this film strong was the two lead male characters. Most of their lines were instant quotes that my friend and I were repeating all night after watching the film, hence the beginning quote, "Junkies." They were priceless.

My only critique was the kill scenes were a little weak. It was completely forgivable because the rest of the movie was so entertaining.

Definitely pick up this film if you are an 80's horror fan. You will not be disappointed!
