art in our era.

Having discussions with several other artists lately it is clear that we have reached one unanimous consensus: we all don't know what the hell to do:
In this ever growing techno world, more an more artists, be it film directors, cinematographers, musicians, have emerged. This has its pros and cons. It is much harder for an artist producing good work to get noticed in a sea of mediocrity. With a flood of content for consumers to chose from, it in ways devalues what we strive to make. It is an overload for most people. What happens is sometimes not the most pleasing to an artist. Nothing.
In our era, it is now up to the artist to figure out their path. Whether it be the traditional approach with a media giant, or the far more gutsy move of forging ahead on your own, taking alternative steps to have your art noticed, seen and respected. As a filmmaker, I can't help but feel defeated before I've even began. When you narrow it down to the number of hits your youtube trailer has or a simple "like" button on a facebook page, it is easy to get discouraged. As an independent, it is not as easy to get 100,000 hits on my trailers or likes on my facebook page. How do things catch on? How do we standout? It is these questions that will either make you work twice as hard - or - get a desk job. For now I prefer working twice as hard and living off of nothing, hoping to have my work catch on.
This film helped put some things in perspective. If you are an artist, filmmaker, musician, author, you should check out this film. We can all relate to this in the era we are living in.
